Get Inspired: The 2009 Mackenzie Awards Winners!
Youth between the ages of 13-19 are at the fore-front of change. The Mackenzie Awards celebrate youth who are really making a difference in their communities and in the not-for-profit world. Candidates are judged on a number of factors, including: the scope of their volunteering and fundraising efforts, their leadership and creativity, their hands-on involvement in their philanthropic pursuits, the length and level of their involvement and the impact on their community and their charity.
Sophie Gran-Ruaz
This 17 year-old Mississauga resident works with her own organization that she founded at age 11; Snug as a Bug, Kids Helping Kids. Snug as a Bug helps children living in shelters by providing packages with new toys, books, clothes and school supplies, as well as substantial donations.
Sophie was inspired when she began interviewing people living on the streets. ”Being 11, I was not plagued by thoughts of failure or rejection. It wasn’t long before things started to snowball. This award is an example of how, with a little persistence, we can give back to the community.” (CN Newswire interview)
The busiest day of the year at Snug as a Bug is what Sophie calls “packing day”. That’s when all her volunteers help packing the donated items into packages by age, from babies to teens. Sophie’s volunteers range from 10 to 70, including neighbours, teachers, friends and family – as this day truly brings the community together. “I had the determination to take on this task, but none of this would have been possible without the support of all the volunteers who help make the charity a reality,” says Sophia. “Together we are Snug as a Bug, Kids Helping Kids.”
