Toxic Trespass – airing this Sunday on TVO

Answer: a) According to the United Nations, less then 1% of all water on Earth is readily accessible for human use.

A parents’ biggest “toxic nightmare” – your 10-year-old daughter takes a blood test and she has over 12 different kinds of carcinogens in her blood, poisons for the human body such as benzene and the long banned DDT. Sound like a urban legend? Try looking next-door in Windsor and Sarnia, the top two places identified as Canada’s toxic hotspots. Both cities have startling population clusters showing signs of deadly diseases. And looking around is exactly what filmmaker Barri Cohen sets out to do when she discovers her daughter’s blood is filled with chemicals, chemicals that are all around us, and affecting Canadians everywhere.

Throughout her travels Barri meets individuals who are passionate about creating positive change -activists, doctors and scientists alike, all who see the evidential links between environmental pollution and health problems. And she quickly learns how quickly the barriers go up when one starts asking questions. This documentary is moving, passionate and funny – as Cohen encounters roadblocks in the form of federal officials. One individual even tells her his department is “planning to discuss the plans.”

This piece also provides great information and resources for any parents concerned about their children – Barri even provides an accompanying resource guide.

Watch Toxic Trespass this Sunday, at 10:30pm on TVO.
