The Dorothy Ley Hospice

The Dorothy Ley Hospice is a volunteer-based community service organization offering compassionate care to people living with the challenges of a life-limiting illness or loss and helps them live their lives to the fullest.

Their programs and services meet a variety of support needs for individuals, families and care providers. Any individual facing the challenges of a life-limiting illness, regardless of age or medical condition, can access hospice support. Members of their families or others who have suffered a loss can also access complementary supports, where available.

Gary Carleton – A Hero in Gumboots

The Canadian Red Cross helps people affected by emergencies and disasters – situations ranging from a housefire to a flood that disrupts an entire region of the country. Following a disaster, Red Cross works with governments and other humanitarian organizations to provide for people’s basic needs – food, clothing, shelter, first aid, emotional support and family reunification.

Every one of the more than 30,000 Canadians who volunteer plays a vital role in Red Cross operations.

Each activity, from responding to disasters, educating youth on violence and abuse prevention, fundraising and governing, is equally important. For every person served there are hundreds of volunteers working behind the scenes coordinating, supporting and training.

During a emergency response the Canadian Red Cross experienced this year on Vancouver Island, one volunteer stood out in-particular for Disaster Management Coordinator Elysia Dempsey. Gary Carleton has worked with the Canadian Red Cross for over 4 years and has been described as invaluable, dedicated, instrumental, a strong mentor, and tireless. He is quite a humble fellow – a proud father of two and an IT business owner by day, and a Red Cross hero by night.

On November 24, 2009 the Cowichan Valley Regional District experienced extremely heavy rainfall and major flooding throughout. A state of emergency was called and many were evacuated from their homes. 151 homes in the area were affected by the flooding, some homes had water up as high as their door handles! And because it was overland flooding none of the home owners insurance would cover the damages. Gary Carleton was the lead volunteer for the Red Cross during this response. Upon hearing of the plight of his fellow citizens, Gary quickly mobilized into action visiting each person affected by the floods and ensuring that their needs were met. Gary worked tireless hours, often not coming home until well after midnight and starting back up again at 7 or 8 am, all as a Red Cross volunteer.

Even after most of the aid organizations had packed up and gone home Gary could still be found in his gumboots with is Red Cross vest, knocking on doors to ensure that residents were happily settled back into their homes. His dedicated and endless energy to help those in need was truly amazing and inspired many tears of gratitude and thanks both from his own community and from the organization that he volunteers with.

Volunteer Abbotsford is looking for tutors to work with adult learners in math, reading and writing.

Salt Spring Center of Yoga is offering a work exchange: skilled trades people to assist with building a new facility in exchange for free-use of all the facilities and amenities.

Laurie K is looking for volunteers to help out at her event “National Mom 2 Mom Day” – May 1st, in hopes to break a world record by raising $250,000 for Unity for Autism.

As the national voice for volunteerism, Volunteer Canada leads the advancement of volunteerism in strengthening society and improving quality of life in Canada by recognizing volunteer involvement as essential to building healthy, quality communities.

Working with its members and partners in communities across Canada, Volunteer Canada develops and implements a wide range of research and public policy initiatives, as well as programs, which all relate to volunteerism and the voluntary sector.

For more than a decade, Volunteer Canada has been working with businesses of all sizes across the country to help them develop, improve and justify their employee volunteer programs.

In 2005, Volunteer Canada joined forces with 21 national corporations to form the Canadian Corporate Council on Volunteering—a peer to peer group of leaders who promote the value and impact of employee volunteer programs.

The Council has continued to evolve since its inception and is now focused on the development of this Centre for Excellence in Corporate Community Involvement. The development framework for the Centre includes four pillars—Information, Curriculum, Research & Best Practices, and Consultation & Support.

The Centre for Excellence brings together the for-profit and nonprofit sectors on common ground for the first time in Canada. Participants from both sectors will learn how to better communicate and work together in partnership by leaning about each other through the four pillars.

Volunteer sector surging

For London’s growing army of unemployed, volunteering could be a useful bridge back to a job.

With unemployment soaring across the continent, reports from the United States show a surge in the volunteer sector, especially among young graduates.

Michelle Baldwin, executive director of the Pillar Nonprofit Network in London, said there’s no sign of a similar pattern in this area yet, but she expects interest in volunteer opportunities will grow as the job situation deteriorates.

“Employment agencies are definitely recommending individuals volunteer as a way to build up their resume and their network,” she said.

The Pillar Nonprofit Network encourages volunteerism and maintains a database of volunteer opportunities at non-profit agencies.

Baldwin said volunteering is valued by employers and allows job seekers to build contacts.

“Employers are looking at volunteer experience on resumes. It may not equal job experience, but it is taken into consideration,” she said.

She said recent immigrants find volunteering a good way to build experience in the community.
